The Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (ifeu) Heidelberg as scientific partner of EcoPassenger has been working on the development of methodologies of emission calculation in transportation for years. ifeu developed the "TREMOD - Transport Emission Model", which is the basis of German emissions and climate protection reporting.
ifeu has been and still is actively involved in global standardization processes (e. g. EN 16258, ISO 14067). So EcoPassenger is based on methodologies and emission factors, which are internationally accepted and adapted to latest scientific findings. IFEU values include the emissions calculation for the national electricity production mix.
The Sustainable Development Foundation (SusDev), based in Rome, collects, checks and calculates the emission factors and consumptions of European railways based in the Environmental Strategy Reporting System (ESRS) of UIC. ESRS includes a set of indicators and definition of parameters and data to be collected and a external policy for communication and the Railways Electricity Mix, considering the electricity produced by railways and the Green Certificates (Guarantees of Origin) purchased by rail companies.
The dual reporting of the electricity emissions follows the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance, main standard on the topic, launched at the beginning of 2015.
